August — From Toothpaste to Technology

Hi everyone! This is Joey from the Service Beakers’ staff.

As part of our laptop grant program, we have delivered more than 200 computers to under-resourced students in Honduras. This month, I wanted to highlight the substantial overall progress that has been made for young students in these communities.

When our partner organization, St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church, sent its first mission to the parish community of Nuestra Señora de Suyapa, Olancho, Honduras in 2001, the area was in a dire state, lacking the most essential resources. St. Michael has done extraordinary work to improve quality of life in this community in the years since, providing healthcare, school supplies, agricultural education, and spiritual programs, in addition to basic necessities like roofs, floors, and clean water. However, there is still work to be done.

Education for young students, in particular, has remained a significant challenge. While school is free, the resources to attend are not, and many families are unable to bear the cost. The Honduras team, however, has provided free school supplies and uniforms for over 2,000 children, and more than 250 students have graduated from their schooling over the course of the program’s history.

One of our friends in the Honduras Ministry recently remarked that when their team first arrived, they were shocked that the children had never even been taught how to brush their teeth. Yet, they are now using the same laptops that we recently provided them to type, use software, and access online educational resources. Clearly, these students have immense potential—it is our obligation and honor to provide them with the means to realize it.
